The Door Beneath the Pyramid
The old door under the stairs glowed with a golden symbol Kai and Zoe had never seen before. Kai, in his blue hoodie, poked it with one finger just as Zoe cried, “Wait, I’m still blinking!”
The door swung open with a whoosh of warm air. Kai’s brown-and-white sneakers slipped, Zoe’s pink-and-white sneakers skidded, and they tumbled onto pale sand beneath a blazing Egyptian sun.
Ahead, workers tapped stone blocks into a hillside while painted signs marked narrow openings. “Tomb builders,” Zoe whispered, her green eyes wide, while Kai brushed sand from his tousled hair like he meant to be dramatic.
A young apprentice scribe ran toward them clutching an empty papyrus tube. “My safe-route plan is gone!” he gasped. “Without it, the passage setters may seal the wrong way.”
“I can read hieroglyphs,” Kai announced. He pointed at a painted owl and said, “This clearly means, ‘Free snacks this direction.’”
Zoe, with both hair buns bouncing, opened her clue notebook. “It means a sound, not snacks, Professor Sandwich,” she said, copying the owl, a reed, and a foot sign.
Menna handed Zoe a reed pen dipped in black ink. “Scribes practice signs for names, sounds, and warnings,” he said, pointing to papyrus rolls stacked beside a stone bench.
Inside the cool passage, painted arrows and symbols ran along the wall. Zoe wanted to follow a line of reed signs, but Kai spotted a half-open stone door and hurried toward it.
“That’s faster!” Kai said, pushing. “That’s probably not safe!” Zoe said, reaching too late as the floor clicked beneath his sneaker.
Stone rumbled behind them. A sealing slab began sliding down, slow but heavy, shrinking the bright rectangle of daylight.
Menna went pale. “Builders use these mechanisms to close hidden passages after work,” he said. “The safe route plan showed which steps to avoid!”
Kai swallowed, then grinned shakily. “Good news: I found the trap.” Zoe gave him a look. “Amazing. Please find the un-trap now.”
Zoe studied the wall as dust drifted down. “Foot, water ripple, reed, open mouth,” she murmured, tracing the symbols. “The safe path says step where feet face the rising sun.”
Kai leaped onto the marked stones first, testing them with quick, brave hops. Zoe followed, guiding Menna while copying one strange looped symbol that gleamed faintly gold.
At the end, Kai wedged a fallen wooden brace beneath the sealing slab. “Improvising!” he puffed, and Zoe slid under, tugging Menna and the papyrus plan from a hidden crack.
Menna cheered when the builders outside saw the plan’s painted safe-route lines. The glowing old door reappeared in a patch of shade, humming like it had been waiting.
Kai and Zoe stumbled back into their hallway, sandy, breathless, and laughing. On Zoe’s notebook, the copied looped symbol flashed exactly like the one on the door—then both vanished.
