Nova and Ravi pressed their noses near the tall museum window, staring at a white rocket on the launch pad. It looked like a giant pencil standing on a table of concrete, ready to write a line straight into the sky.

Dr. Elena Rivera, an aerospace engineer, smiled and joined them. “A rocket flies because it pushes very fast gas downward,” she said, “and the gas pushes the rocket upward, like two skaters pushing away from each other.”

Nova frowned thoughtfully. “But how can gas push something so heavy?” Dr. Rivera pointed to the rocket engines and explained that burning fuel makes hot gas that rushes out of the bottom at tremendous speed.

Ravi noticed a balloon on a demonstration table. With an adult supervising, Dr. Rivera blew it up, held the neck closed, and let it go safely across the room. “The air shoots one way, and the balloon zooms the other way,” she said. “That is push power.”

A sign beside a statue showed Sir Isaac Newton holding an apple and a notebook. Dr. Rivera explained Newton’s third law of motion: for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. The action is gas blasting down; the reaction is the rocket moving up.

Rockets carry fuel, but they also carry something called an oxidizer. On Earth, campfires use oxygen from the air, but rockets must work high above the air too. The oxidizer helps the fuel burn inside the engine without needing outside air.

Inside a rocket engine, fuel and oxidizer mix in a strong chamber and burn to make super-hot gas. The gas escapes through a narrow nozzle, which shapes and speeds the flow downward. The nozzle is like a carefully designed slide for gas, not just a hole.

Nova asked why rockets are built in sections. Dr. Rivera showed a diagram of stages, which are parts that work one after another. When a lower stage uses up its fuel, it can separate, making the rest of the rocket lighter and easier to speed up.

Nova and Ravi looked back at the rocket, now understanding its quiet strength. Rockets fly by action and reaction, carrying fuel and oxidizer, using engines, stages, steering, and careful math. The mystery felt big, but not impossible—just a wonderful science push upward.
