Spark of the Deep
Kai and Zoe were not usually the first hands up in Mrs. Twitch’s science class. But today, when she drew a glowing timeline from 'Fiery Earth' to 'Living Earth,' they leaned so far forward their pencils rolled away.
After class, Mrs. Twitch locked the cupboard and studied them over her glasses. ‘I have no sense of humor,’ she said, ‘but I do have the Core.’ From her pocket she lifted an ancient amber fossil compass, bright as trapped sunset.
She called it the Chrono-Amber Core, the guide for a five-book time-mapping journey through Earth’s deep history. It worked only when both children touched it and shared one goal. Zoe whispered, 'We want to see Earth when it was young,' and Kai nodded hard.
Warm amber light liquefied inside the Core and flowed like honey over their hands. Golden dust swirled around the classroom tables, the clock spun backward, and the floor seemed to become sky. Then the children landed on a red, rumbling world.
Earth was born about 4.5 billion years ago from dust and rock circling the young Sun. Gravity pulled pieces together, and crashes released heat, making the planet mostly molten. Kai saw lava seas shining below a dark sky full of meteors.
A faint golden shimmer surrounded them, and Zoe gasped, 'We can breathe!' The Core protected them from deadly gases and heat, but not from being hit or falling. When a hot rock bounced nearby, both children scrambled behind a black basalt ridge.
The Core’s map showed Earth slowly cooling. A crust formed like the skin on pudding, except this pudding had volcanoes, ash, and lightning. Steam from volcanoes, plus water brought by icy space rocks, helped make rain that fell for ages.
The rain gathered in low places and became early oceans. They were not calm blue holiday seas; they were warm, mineral-rich, and sometimes stormy under a dimmer young Sun. Kai marked 'oceans form' on the glowing time-map with a shaky finger.
The Core pulled them beneath the surface, through golden dust mixed with bubbles. Its shimmer let them survive the crushing deep water, but Mrs. Twitch’s warning echoed in Kai’s mind: protection was not a superhero shield. They drifted carefully toward chimney-shaped towers.
