AI evolution

Artificial intelligence, or AI, means machines that can do tasks that usually need human intelligence. This includes recognizing speech, understanding language, playing games, and making decisions. The idea of intelligent machines is old, but real AI started in the 1900s.

In 1950, the mathematician Alan Turing asked, “Can machines think?” He created the Turing Test, a way to see if a machine’s answers could fool a human into thinking it was a person. This was one of the first big ideas in AI.

The term “artificial intelligence” was first used in 1956 at a meeting at Dartmouth College in the United States. Scientists like John McCarthy and Marvin Minsky hoped machines would soon solve many problems as well as humans. Computers were slow and small back then, so progress was harder than they expected.

In the 1960s and 1970s, AI programs could play simple games and solve math problems. In the 1980s, “expert systems” were created to help doctors and engineers make decisions using rules. However, these systems struggled when problems became too complex or changed quickly.

Around the 1990s and 2000s, AI improved as computers became faster and data became easier to collect. A famous moment came in 1997 when IBM’s computer Deep Blue beat world chess champion Garry Kasparov. This showed that AI could compete with top human players in some tasks.

Modern AI often uses machine learning and a special method called deep learning. Instead of following fixed rules, these systems learn from huge amounts of data, like millions of pictures or sentences. This is how AI can recognize faces, translate languages, and suggest videos or songs.

Today, AI is used in phones, cars, hospitals, and many other places. It helps doctors read medical images, supports drivers with navigation, and lets people talk to virtual assistants. Scientists are also studying AI safety and ethics to make sure this powerful technology is used responsibly.
