The Great Bird Journey
High above the Arctic Ocean, a remarkable bird named Atlas stretched his wings and prepared for an incredible journey. Atlas was an Arctic tern, and he was about to fly over 70,000 kilometers from the frozen north all the way to Antarctica and back again—the longest migration of any animal on Earth!
But how did Atlas know exactly where to go? Dr. Maria Santos, a scientist who studies birds called an ornithologist, had spent years trying to answer this fascinating question. She watched through her binoculars as Atlas circled overhead, marveling at the mystery of bird migration.
Birds like Atlas use several amazing tools built right into their bodies to navigate across the world. These incredible journeys require perfect navigation skills.
Dr. Santos discovered through her research that birds can also smell their way home! Some species can detect odors carried on the wind from hundreds of kilometers away. Seabirds can smell certain chemicals produced by ocean plankton, which helps them find areas rich with fish to eat.
The timing of migration is controlled by changes in daylight length and hormones in the bird's body. As days get shorter in autumn, birds feel an urge called zugunruhe, which is German for 'migration restlessness.' They become fidgety and ready to fly, even if they're kept in cages—their bodies just know it's time to go.
