From Seed to Tree

Meet Acorn, a tiny seed with an amazing adventure ahead! Dr. Maria Green, a botanist who studies plants, is about to show us how this little seed will transform into a mighty oak tree.

When Acorn falls from a parent tree and lands on soil, something magical begins. If conditions are just right—with enough moisture and warmth—the seed coat softens and cracks open. This process is called germination, which means the seed is waking up and starting to grow!

The first thing to emerge is a tiny root called a radicle. This root pushes down into the soil, anchoring Acorn in place and searching for water and nutrients.

Next, a small shoot pushes upward through the soil toward the sunlight. When it breaks through the surface, the first leaves unfold.

Dr. Green explains that photosynthesis is how plants create their own energy. The leaves absorb sunlight and combine it with water from the roots and carbon dioxide from the air to make sugar, which feeds the growing tree.

As months and years pass, Acorn becomes Oakley, a young tree with a stronger trunk and spreading branches.

When Oakley matures after many years, beautiful flowers appear in spring. Oak trees have both male and female flowers on the same tree.

Inside each acorn grows a baby oak tree, waiting for the right moment. When the acorns ripen and fall to the ground, some are carried away by squirrels who bury them as food storage.

Dr. Green smiles as she watches Oakley's branches sway in the breeze. From a single seed to a towering tree that can live for hundreds of years, producing thousands of seeds—this is nature's incredible cycle of life.
