Could There Be Life on Another Planet?
Dr. Maya Chen gazed through her powerful telescope at the night sky, searching for planets beyond our solar system. She had spent years looking for worlds that might be home to living creatures, just like Earth is home to us. "The universe is so vast," she thought, "surely we can't be alone!"
Our universe contains billions and billions of stars, and many of these stars have planets orbiting around them, just like Earth orbits our Sun. Scientists call planets outside our solar system "exoplanets," and they've discovered more than 5,000 of them so far! Some are giant balls of gas like Jupiter, while others are rocky worlds that might be more like Earth.
Professor James Okoye, an astrobiologist, studies what life needs to survive. Astrobiologists are scientists who search for life beyond Earth and study how living things might exist in space. "On Earth, every living thing needs certain basic ingredients," he explained to his students. "We need water to drink, energy from the Sun or chemicals, and the right temperature—not too hot and not too cold."
Scientists have found several exoplanets in what they call the "Goldilocks Zone." Just like in the fairy tale where Goldilocks wanted porridge that was just right, this zone is the perfect distance from a star—not too close where everything would burn up, and not too far where everything would freeze solid. In this special zone, water can exist as a liquid, which is essential for life as we know it.
One exciting discovery is a planet called Proxima Centauri b, which orbits the closest star to our Sun. This rocky planet sits in its star's Goldilocks Zone and is only about four light-years away. That might sound close, but it would still take our fastest spacecraft over 6,000 years to get there!
Sofia Rodriguez, a space engineer, designs robots and spacecraft to explore other worlds. "We've sent rovers to Mars to search for signs of ancient life," she said, pointing to images on her computer screen. "Mars once had rivers and lakes billions of years ago, so maybe tiny microbes lived there." Microbes are living things so small you need a microscope to see them, like bacteria.
NASA's Perseverance rover is currently drilling into Martian rocks, looking for fossils of ancient microbes. Scientists are also very interested in Europa, one of Jupiter's moons. Beneath Europa's icy surface lies a huge ocean of liquid water, kept warm by the moon's movements. Could strange creatures swim in that dark, cold sea?
Dr. Chen explained that life on other planets might look very different from life on Earth. "On Earth, we have creatures living in boiling hot springs, frozen Antarctic ice, and even deep underground," she said. "Life is incredibly adaptable!" If life can survive in Earth's strangest places, imagine what might live on alien worlds.
