The Crown of Storms
Kai climbed the mountain path above Gyeongju with coal dust in his hair and a basket biting into his shoulders. Far below, forge bells rang from his family’s old workshop.
He was only a blacksmith’s assistant, but the village depended on their plows, pots, and horseshoes. If the forge closed, many working families would suffer.
Storm clouds gathered over the royal mounds, round green tombs resting like sleeping giants. A sudden landslide cracked one mound open with a thunderous boom.
Kai tumbled behind a pine tree and saw gold shining in the dirt. It was a crown shaped like deer antlers and tiny leaves, bright as sunrise.
When Kai touched it, jade light spilled between the branches. A white dragon uncoiled from the crown, filling the sky with mist and sparks.
I am Bailong, guardian of the cycle, said the dragon. You have awakened me, and now I must grant exactly three humble wishes before I am free.
Kai’s heart leaped. Then Bailong added, The wishes cannot serve you. They must improve another person’s life, or they will fail.
On the path, Kai met Zoe, the merchant guild leader’s daughter, running from palace messengers. Her family wanted her to marry into a trade alliance she feared.
Before Kai could speak, cries rose from the lower village. The landslide had blocked the spring, and elderly families had no clean water.
Kai made the first wish. May the spring flow safely for the villagers who cannot climb for water.
Bailong swept his jade whiskers across the rocks. Water burst free, clear and singing, while thankful villagers filled their jars.
Zoe smiled, but her hands trembled when guild riders appeared. Kai made the second wish: Give Zoe the courage and protection to choose her own path.
A ring of soft jade light circled Zoe. Her voice grew steady as temple bells rang, and the riders lowered their eyes.
Then Lord Geum arrived in black armor, his soldiers kicking up coal dust. He wanted the crown to wish for an invincible army and seize every forge in the valley.
Lord Geum grabbed the crown and shouted his selfish wish. Nothing happened, except one tiny golden leaf fell off and bonked his helmet.
Bailong’s storm clouds curled like laughing dragons. Power without kindness is only noise, he warned.
Lord Geum ordered his men toward the forge anyway. Sparks flew as villagers gathered, holding hammers, bells, clay molds, and ancestral tools.
Kai thought of wishing for riches to save his family’s forge, but he shook his head. The final wish had to protect everyone.
He wished that the mountain village’s craft traditions, tools, tombs, and peaceful future would be guarded from greed. Jade light spread over the forges, royal mounds, and market streets.
Lord Geum’s soldiers turned away, ashamed, while Zoe stood beside Kai like a friend who had found her courage. Bailong became the golden crown once more, then vanished on a sea wind toward a new age.
