Nia and Leo hurried into the bright science museum learning lab, where planets hung from the ceiling like colorful lanterns. Dr. Asha Vega rolled a soft foam ball across the table, then let it drop into her hand. Nia grinned and asked the biggest question of the day: what would happen if gravity disappeared?

Dr. Vega smiled and tapped the floor with her shoe. Gravity is a pull between things that have mass, she explained, and mass means how much matter something has. Earth has a lot of mass, so it pulls us, our backpacks, the oceans, and even the air toward its center.

A blue hologram shimmered beside a model apple tree, and Sir Isaac Newton appeared in his old-fashioned coat. He told the children that an apple did not need to bop him on the head to make him think. Seeing things fall helped him wonder whether the same gravity that pulls apples down also helps guide the Moon.

Dr. Vega placed a pretend silver switch on the table, labeled Gravity Off, and Leo’s eyes grew wide.
