Why Do We See Rainbows?
Leo rushed into Dr. Chen's laboratory, his jacket still wet from the rain outside. "Dr. Chen! I just saw the most amazing rainbow on my way here. Why do rainbows appear after it rains?"
Dr. Chen smiled and pulled out a triangular piece of glass called a prism from her desk. "Perfect timing, Leo! Let me show you the secret behind one of nature's most beautiful displays."
She walked over to the window where sunlight was streaming through. "You see, sunlight looks white to our eyes, but it's actually made up of many different colors mixed together. When light passes through water droplets in the air, something magical happens."
Dr. Chen held the prism up to the sunlight, and suddenly a beautiful spectrum of colors appeared on the wall. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet danced across the surface. "This is exactly what happens in the sky after rain!"
Leo scribbled notes in his notebook. "But why is the rainbow curved? Why isn't it a straight line across the sky?" "Excellent question!" Dr. Chen beamed. "The rainbow appears curved because of geometry..."
She walked Leo over to a diagram on the wall. "Red light bends the least when it passes through water, so it appears on the outer edge of the rainbow..."
Leo looked thoughtful. "So for me to see a rainbow, the sun has to be behind me and it has to be raining in front of me?" "Exactly right!" Dr. Chen confirmed.
As Leo headed home, he looked up at the clearing sky, hoping to catch one more glimpse of the rainbow—his rainbow—created just for him by dancing light and falling rain.
