What Would It Feel Like to Walk on the Moon?

On July 20, 1969, astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first person to set foot on the Moon. As he climbed down the ladder of the lunar module called Eagle, he spoke the famous words: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Just nineteen minutes later, his fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin joined him on the dusty grey surface.

The very first thing you would notice on the Moon is how light you feel. The Moon's gravity is only one-sixth as strong as Earth's gravity, which is the force that pulls everything down toward the ground. This means if you weigh 60 pounds on Earth, you would only weigh 10 pounds on the Moon!

Because you're so much lighter, walking becomes an entirely different experience. Instead of taking normal steps, you would find yourself bouncing like a kangaroo with each movement. Armstrong and Aldrin discovered that the easiest way to move around was to hop on both feet or take long, loping strides like a slow-motion gazelle.

Let's imagine our young explorer Maya has traveled to the Moon in the future. As she takes her first step, her boot sinks slightly into the fine, powdery dust covering the lunar surface. This dust, called regolith, is created by billions of years of meteorites smashing into the Moon's surface and breaking rocks into tiny particles.

Maya notices that her footprint stays perfectly preserved in the dust. Unlike on Earth, where wind and rain would quickly erase her tracks, there's no weather on the Moon to disturb them. The footprints that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin made in 1969 are still there today, exactly as they left them more than fifty years ago!

Looking around, Maya sees a landscape unlike anything on Earth. The ground is covered in grey and brown dust, with rocks of all sizes scattered everywhere. There are no trees, no rivers, no clouds—just an endless rocky desert stretching to the horizon.

If Maya tries to jump, she'll soar much higher than she ever could on Earth. While she might jump two feet high at home, on the Moon she could easily jump twelve feet into the air! However, she falls back down very slowly, taking much longer to return to the surface than she would on Earth.

Walking on the Moon would be an unforgettable adventure—bouncing in slow motion across an ancient, silent world while Earth hangs in the black sky above.
