How Does Soap Remove Dirt?
Dr. Maya Chen stood in her laboratory with two excited students, Leo and Amara, ready to unlock the secret of how soap cleans. The Romans also used soap, though they often preferred scraping their skin with special tools in bathhouses! The modern soap we use today was perfected in the 19th century when French chemist Michel Eugène Chevreul discovered exactly how fats and oils could be transformed into soap through a process called saponification. This happens when fats react with an alkali, like lye, creating the special molecules that can grab both water and oil.
As the lesson ended, both children looked at the ordinary bar of soap with new respect, knowing it contained millions of molecular heroes ready to battle dirt and germs every single day.
