Volcanos
Leo stood at the edge of a dormant volcano in Hawaii, staring into the massive crater below. Dr. Maria Santos, a volcanologist who studies volcanoes, smiled at his amazement. "Would you like to know what happens deep inside a volcano?" she asked.
Dr. Santos explained that far beneath the Earth's surface, about 100 kilometers down, the rock is so hot that it melts into a thick, glowing liquid called magma. This magma is lighter than the solid rock around it, so it slowly rises upward through cracks in the Earth's crust. "Think of it like a hot air balloon floating upward," she said, "except this balloon is made of melted rock!"
As the magma rises, it collects in a huge underground chamber called a magma chamber. Leo imagined a giant underground lake filled with glowing orange liquid. Dr. Santos nodded, explaining that pressure builds up in this chamber as more magma flows in from below, like air building up in a balloon. "When the pressure gets too strong, the volcano erupts!" Dr. Santos said excitedly.
Dr. Santos showed Leo something amazing through her binoculars. On a nearby active volcano, they could see old lava flows that had cooled and hardened into black rock. "This is how volcanoes create new land," she explained. When lava cools, it turns into solid rock, adding new layers to the Earth's surface. Over millions of years, these layers of cooled lava build up to create volcanic mountains and even entire islands.
