The forest of demons

Abigail had heard a thousand scary stories about The forest of demons, but none of them felt real under the bright afternoon sun. She tightened the straps of her backpack, took a deep breath, and stepped past the crooked sign that warned, “TURN BACK NOW.”

The trees inside were darker, their branches twisted like claws reaching for the sky. Strange blue fireflies hovered in the air, blinking like tiny warning lights. Abigail’s heart raced, but her curiosity burned brighter than her fear.

A soft voice floated through the trees. “You’re very brave to walk in here alone, Abigail.” Out of a swirl of silver mist stepped The Good Witch linoy, her cloak shimmering like moonlight on water.

They walked deeper until the trees grew so tall they hid the sky completely. The air felt heavy, as if the forest were holding its breath. Ahead, an ancient stone arch stood covered in glowing runes.

On top of the arch crouched a massive creature with the body of a lion and the wings and head of an eagle. Its golden eyes blazed as it spoke. “I am The Ancient Guardian. No one passes unless they face what they fear most.”

Abigail swallowed hard. “What are you guarding?” she asked. The Ancient Guardian’s feathers ruffled, sending sparks of light into the air.

That is the question everyone asks,” the gryphon rumbled. “But the answer only appears to those who dare to look within.” The Good Witch linoy nodded, as if she already knew what would happen.

A mirror rose from the ground before Abigail, its surface rippling like water. She expected to see some horrible monster, but instead she saw herself—tired, worried, and small.

Abigail felt her chest tighten. “My greatest fear… is failing,” she whispered. “Disappointing everyone. Proving I’m not good enough.” Her voice trembled, but she didn’t look away.

The Ancient Guardian stepped down from the arch, every footstep shaking the earth. “Yet here you stand, in the heart of The forest of demons,” it said. “Facing your fear instead of running from it.”

The Good Witch linoy placed a gentle hand on Abigail’s shoulder. “Courage isn’t the absence of fear,” she said softly. “It’s choosing to move forward even when your knees are shaking.” Abigail straightened her back, feeling a new strength build inside her.

The mirror’s surface shimmered and changed. Now it showed her climbing mountains, speaking up, helping others lost in the same dark woods. She wasn’t fearless in the images, but she kept going.

The Ancient Guardian bowed its great head. “You have passed,” it declared. Behind it, the stone arch cracked open, revealing not treasure, but a swirling light that felt warm and calm.

“What were you guarding?” Abigail asked again, stepping closer. The light wrapped around her like a hug she hadn’t known she needed.

“The part of yourself you were too afraid to meet,” the gryphon replied. “Your own courage.” The forest around them seemed less frightening now, more like a place full of secrets waiting to be understood instead of feared.

When Abigail stepped back through the arch, she found herself at the forest’s edge, the sun beginning to set. The Good Witch linoy and The Ancient Guardian were gone, but something had changed. This time, the stories of The forest of demons didn’t sound so scary—because she had discovered the bravest protector of all: herself.
