Moon of Singing Stones

The last bell had not rung yet when Kai reached for the school library door. Instead of shelves and quiet tables, it swung open onto a glowing purple planet, where silver grass waved under a sky full of bright, spinning rings.

Zoe marched up behind him and gasped, then quickly folded her arms. “Stay close, Kai. I am clearly in charge because I brought a pencil, a snack, and excellent common sense.”

Kai stepped onto the purple ground, which felt bouncy like a playground mat. Around them, round stones hummed gentle songs, each one glowing a different color when the wind brushed over it.

They walked between singing stones while the rings in the sky shimmered like giant bracelets. Ahead stood a crystal gate with words carved across it: LISTEN FIRST, THEN ANSWER.

Zoe leaned close to the gate and began giving instructions. “We should press the biggest crystal, then the smallest, then maybe the shiny one, because shiny things are important.”

Kai was about to poke a crystal when the light around them dimmed. Thin crystal shadows slid out from behind the stones, stretching long fingers across the ground.

Zoe grabbed Kai’s sleeve and pulled him behind her yellow raincoat. Her voice wobbled, but she stood tall and said, “Back away, shadowy splinters. You are not invited to our school trip.”

Kai’s heart thumped like a basketball. Zoe’s bossy voice became softer as she said, “Breathe with me. In like smelling cocoa, out like cooling soup.”

They breathed together until the shadows slowed. As the fear in their heads grew quieter, they heard the stones singing three notes: low, high, low.

The gate said listen first,” Kai said. “Maybe the stones are telling us the answer.” Zoe nodded, cheeks pink, and pressed the crystals in the same pattern: low, high, low.

Nothing happened. Kai, nervous and silly, blurted, “Maybe it wants the sound of my legendary underpants trumpet!” and made the smallest rude noise with his lips.

The gate flashed gold. The singing stones burst into giggles of music, and a hidden crystal popped open, showing a round button shaped like a laughing moon.

Zoe stared at Kai. “I cannot believe your naughty joke solved an ancient space puzzle,” she said, trying very hard not to laugh.

Kai pressed the moon button, and the school door appeared inside the gate, glowing warmly. Far above, a huge moon bell began to swing, ready to ring across the purple planet.

Zoe took Kai’s hand, no longer pulling, just holding on. “Next time,” she said, “I’ll listen before I lead.”

“And I’ll joke after I think,” Kai said. Then he grinned. “Probably.”

They stepped through the door just as the moon bell rang, deep and bright. Back in the library, the last school bell answered it, and the two explorers shared a secret smile.
