Pip Can Read

Pip loved snowy mornings, especially when the world looked like a frosty cake. One day, Pip found a tiny penguin named Niko waddling in circles beside three wooden signs.

Niko flapped his little wings. “I want to find the fish picnic, but these marks are tricky!” Pip smiled and pointed to the first sign. “This word is ICE. I-C-E.”

Niko peeped, “Ice!” Then he slid across the shiny path, laughing all the way. At the next sign, Pip said, “This word is HILL. H-I-L-L.”

Together they climbed the small snowy hill, step, slip, giggle, step. At the top, Niko spotted one more sign half-buried in snow. Pip brushed it clean and read, 'FISH. F-I-S-H!'

Niko’s eyes sparkled like stars. “Fish!” he cried, and waddled toward a little basket waiting in the snow. Inside were two fish sandwiches and a note that said, 'Well done, readers!'

Pip and Niko shared lunch under a soft gray sky. Niko sounded out the words again: ice, hill, fish. From that day on, snowy adventures always began with reading.
