Ernies World - Ernie Goes to the Supermarket

Today Ernie went to the supermarket with Mum. He held her hand tight as the glass doors went whoosh, and bright white lights twinkled on every shelf.

Inside, the tills sang, beep, beep, beep! Ernie squeezed his eyes and covered his ears, so Mum took his green ear defenders from her bag. Ahh, the world became softer.

In the fruit aisle, Ernie found the apples. They were red, shiny, and sitting in neat rows like little round soldiers. He counted them slowly, one by one, and Mum waited because there was no rush.

Then they reached the yoghurt shelf. Oh no! Ernie's favourite strawberry yoghurt was gone, and his tummy felt wobbly. His face felt hot, and his fingers curled tight. Mum knelt beside him. "It is okay to feel upset," she said gently. "Let's blow slow breaths, like blowing a feather across the floor." Ernie imagined a tiny feather. He blew out once, twice, three times, until his shoulders felt loose again. Then he chose a new yoghurt with a smiling cow on the pot. At home, Ernie put the yoghurt in the fridge and grinned. "Supermarket done," he said. Ernie had done it his way, and his way worked.
