In a small town called Maplebrook, the rooftops were red and the gardens smelled like mint. Everyone knew everyone—except the new shadow that appeared near the hill.
Mina, who was seven and curious as a cat, followed the shadow after school. It stretched over the path like a dark ribbon, but it didn’t feel scary.
Behind the hill sat a giant with boots as big as bathtubs. He held a tiny teacup between two fingers and whispered, 'Oh dear, I don’t fit anywhere.'
Mina stepped forward and said, 'Hi! I’m Mina. What’s your name?' The giant blinked slowly and smiled. 'I’m Gus,' he said, 'and I think I’m too big for this town.'
Mina noticed Gus’s knees were muddy and his shoulders drooped like sad trees. 'Maybe you just need a job that fits a giant,' she suggested.
They walked into Maplebrook together, careful as can be. Gus tiptoed, but his toe still nudged a fence—CRACK! He gasped. 'I’m sorry!'
Mina raised her hand and called, 'Everyone, wait! Gus isn’t mean. He’s just… enormous.' The neighbors peeked out, wide-eyed.
Mrs. Puddle the baker said, 'If you’re gentle, you can help us.' Gus nodded so hard his hair rustled like leaves.
Soon Gus used one finger to lift heavy flour sacks, and one breath to cool hot pies. He even watered the whole park with a single bucket—like rain from the sky.
At sunset, the mayor brought a ribbon that was actually a long clothesline. 'Gus,' he said, 'you belong here.'
Gus sat on the hill and watched the town lights twinkle. Mina waved up at him, and Gus whispered, 'Thank you for seeing my heart, not just my height.'
