Toby the turtle loved his cool, green pond. One sunny morning, he decided to take a little walk to find a tastier leaf. He walked and walked, not noticing how far he had gone.

Soon the ground felt hot and sandy under his feet. The trees were gone, and the air was very dry. Toby had never seen a place like this before—he had reached the desert!

Toby looked around and saw tall, spiky plants. “Who are you?” he asked. A plant replied, “I’m a cactus. I store water inside my thick stem so I can live many days without rain.”

A quick, slim lizard ran by and stopped to say hello. “I’m Lila the lizard,” she said. “My body likes hot weather, and I hide under rocks to stay cool in the day.” Toby listened carefully, learning how Lila stayed safe and comfortable.

Then Toby spotted a fennec fox with huge ears. “I use my big ears to lose heat and keep cool,” said the fox proudly. “I mostly come out at night when it’s not so hot.” Toby was amazed at how every animal had a special way to live in the desert.

The sun began to set, and Toby felt tired and a little scared. Just then, an old man driving a slow, dusty truck stopped nearby. “You look far from home, little turtle,” he said kindly.

The old man gave Toby a small bowl of water to drink. Then he gently picked Toby up and placed him safely in a box with soft cloth. “Let’s get you back to your pond,” he promised.

As the truck rolled away, Toby watched the desert glowing in the sunset. He felt grateful for the new friends and the amazing things he had learned. When he finally reached his cool pond, he knew he would never forget his desert adventure.
