Mrs. Twitch dimmed the classroom lights and unrolled the almost-finished deep-time map across three desks. Kai and Zoe saw their painted path from fiery young Earth, to early seas, to forests of ferns, to the age of dinosaurs and the sudden asteroid flash. Only one blank space remained: what happened after the terrible ending?

The Chrono-Amber Core rested in its bronze case, glowing around a tiny feather trapped inside the amber. Mrs. Twitch tapped the map with her bird-shaped brooch and said the final journey was about recovery, not ruin. Kai and Zoe placed both hands on the Core and shared one goal: find out how life began again.

Warm amber light liquefied and flowed like honey over their fingers, just as it had on every journey. Golden dust swirled around their shoes, the classroom bent like a reflection in water, and the Core tugged them through time. Its faint protective shimmer wrapped their bodies, helpful for ash and strange air, but not for falling rocks, floods, or silly choices.

They landed in gray stillness about 66 million years ago, just after the asteroid impact. Dust and soot dimmed the Sun, dead branches cracked underfoot, and the air smelled like a cold campfire. Zoe whispered that extinction means a species disappears forever, but Kai pointed to a beetle crawling over bark and said not everything was gone.

The Core pulsed softly, too tired for another major jump, and began absorbing faint life signatures from moss, insects, seeds, and burrowing animals. In the quiet, a tiny mammal called Purgatorius scrambled along a blackened tree trunk, hunting insects and fruit. Small size, warm fur, and flexible diets helped many mammals survive when giant dinosaurs could not.

As weeks and years blurred on the time-map, green returned in patches like paint on wet paper. Ferns sprouted first, then flowering plants spread, feeding insects, birds, and mammals. Mrs. Twitch's notes appeared in amber letters: recovery is slow, but ecosystems rebuild when survivors reproduce, move into open roles, and change over many generations.

The Core carried them forward into the Paleocene and Eocene, when warm forests covered huge parts of Earth. Mammals began adaptive radiation, a science phrase meaning one surviving group branches into many forms as it uses different niches, or ways of living. Some climbed, some dug, some ran, and some nibbled leaves under the shadows of surviving birds.

A striped, dog-sized Hyracotherium stepped between forest shrubs, nothing like a modern racehorse except for its grazing family future. Zoe counted its toes and laughed because it looked as if a deer and a puppy had made a secret plan. Over millions of years, some horse relatives grew longer legs, fewer toes, and high-crowned teeth for grinding gritty grass.

Near a warm river, Kai almost leaned too close to what looked like a furry crocodile. It was Ambulocetus, an early whale relative that could walk on land and swim with powerful feet. The Core shimmer let the children breathe in humid ancient air, but it did not stop a splash, so they leaped backward and landed in harmless mud.

At last the Core, glowing full again, pulled Kai and Zoe through swirling golden dust to present-day school. A City Pigeon bobbed on the windowsill, iridescent neck flashing green and purple in the afternoon sun. Kai stared and whispered that the pigeon was a living dinosaur, which made Zoe salute it with her pencil.
