On the wall were portraits of Ada Lovelace and Alan Turing, two people who helped history imagine powerful computing machines. Ada wrote ideas for a machine that could follow instructions, and Alan studied how machines could solve problems, long before classroom tablets existed.

Ms. Rivera pointed to Byte, the blue classroom AI program on a tablet stand. She explained that artificial intelligence, or AI, is a computer system made by people to do tasks that seem smart, such as sorting pictures, suggesting songs, or helping spell words.

Byte did not have a brain, feelings, or imagination like a child. It used computer instructions and lots of examples to find patterns, which are clues that repeat, like stripes on a tiger, wheels on a bicycle, or the shape of the letter A.

First, Ms. Rivera poured a jar of buttons onto the table. Maya sorted them by color, while Leo sorted them by shape, and they noticed that the same data, meaning pieces of information, could be organized in different useful ways.

Then Ms. Rivera mixed the buttons again and covered the labels. If Maya saw many red round buttons in one pile and many blue square buttons in another, she could guess the sorting rule from examples; AI training works a little like that.

The class played a safe observation game with animal cards. Maya noticed whiskers and pointy ears, Leo noticed paw shapes, and Byte displayed a colorful diagram showing how a computer can measure details called features, which help describe each example.

At the end, Maya and Leo recapped the mystery. AI learns patterns from data, practices during training, improves with feedback, gets checked with tests, and works best when thoughtful humans guide it with care, curiosity, and kindness.
