When My Friend Does Not Want to Play

My name is Liam. Sometimes I want to play with my friend Sofia during break time at school. When I see Sofia, I might walk over and ask, "Do you want to play tag with me?" This is a friendly way to ask someone to play.

Sometimes Sofia says, "Yes! Let's play!" When this happens, we have fun playing together. We run and laugh and enjoy our time. But sometimes Sofia says, "No thank you, Liam. I want to read my book right now." This is okay.

When Sofia says she does not want to play, I can take a deep breath. I can say, "That's okay, Sofia. Maybe we can play later." This shows I understand and respect her choice. After Sofia says no, I have other choices.

Sometimes I might feel a little disappointed when Sofia does not want to play. Feeling disappointed is normal and okay. The feeling usually goes away after a little while. I can remember that Sofia is still my friend, even when she does not want to play right now.

Later that day or another day, Sofia might come to me and ask, "Liam, do you want to play now?" When I am ready, I can say yes. Friendship means respecting each other's choices.
