The Solar System
Captain Maya stood at the window of the Starlight Explorer, gazing at the brilliant Sun in the distance. Beside her, young astronaut Leo and their robot companion Orbit were buzzing with excitement. Today was the day they would begin their incredible journey through the solar system!
"Remember," Captain Maya said with a smile, "the solar system is like our cosmic neighborhood. The Sun is at the center, and eight planets orbit around it, along with moons, asteroids, and comets."
Orbit's eyes glowed brighter as the spacecraft zoomed past Mercury, the smallest planet and closest to the Sun. "My sensors show the temperature here reaches 430 degrees Celsius during the day!" the little robot beeped. Leo's eyes widened as he pressed his nose against the viewing window, watching the gray, cratered surface zip by below.
Next, they approached Venus, wrapped in thick yellowish clouds. Captain Maya explained that Venus was often called Earth's sister planet because they were similar in size. "But don't be fooled," she warned, "those clouds are made of sulfuric acid, and the surface is hot enough to melt lead!"
As they left Venus behind, a beautiful blue and green marble came into view. "Home!" Leo shouted happily, recognizing Earth immediately. They could see swirling white clouds, vast oceans, and brown and green continents where billions of people lived.
Their next stop was the Red Planet—Mars! Its rusty, reddish-orange surface stretched out below them like an endless desert. "Mars gets its color from iron oxide, which is basically rust," Orbit explained, scanning the surface with his sensors.
As they journeyed farther from the Sun, they entered the realm of the giant planets. First came Jupiter, so enormous that over 1,300 Earths could fit inside it! The massive planet spun before them, covered in swirling bands of orange, brown, and white clouds.
Finally, they reached Neptune, the windiest planet in the solar system. Deep blue and mysterious, Neptune was so far from the Sun that it took 165 Earth years to complete one orbit! "The winds here blow at over 2,000 kilometers per hour," Orbit announced, his antenna spinning with excitement.
