The Forest of Lost Wishes
Luna had always been careful with her wishes. Every birthday candle, every shooting star, every coin tossed into a fountain—she saved them all for something truly special. But on her ninth birthday, when her grandmother asked what she wished for, Luna realized she had forgotten what she truly wanted.
That night, a glowing fox appeared at her window. "I am Ember, guardian of the Forest of Lost Wishes," the fox said, its tail shimmering like firelight. "Your forgotten wish has called to me. If you want to find it again, you must journey to my forest before the next full moon."
Luna didn't hesitate. She grabbed her backpack and followed Ember through her bedroom mirror, which had transformed into a swirling portal. On the other side lay a mystical forest where trees grew upside down and clouds drifted between the branches like cotton candy.
"Every wish ever forgotten comes here," Ember explained, leading her down a path of golden leaves. "But be warned—you may find wishes you didn't know you'd lost." Luna saw wishes floating like fireflies: a boy's wish for courage, an artist's wish for inspiration, a teacher's wish for patience.
Deeper in the forest, they met Wisdom, an ancient owl wearing tiny spectacles. "Ah, young Luna," the owl hooted softly. "Your wish is special indeed. It split into three pieces when you forgot it, and you must gather them all."
Luna's first piece glowed near a crystal stream. As she touched it, memories flooded back—wishing her sick mother would smile again. The second piece hung from a star-shaped flower, reminding her of wishing for adventure and courage. But the third piece was nowhere to be found.
"Sometimes," Wisdom said gently, "the most important piece is the one we're still creating." Luna closed her eyes and thought hard. What did she truly want now, in this moment?
Suddenly, she understood. Her third wish appeared in her own hands, glowing brighter than the others. It wasn't just about her mother's health or her own adventures—it was about using her courage to help others, just as Ember and Wisdom had helped her.
The three pieces merged together, creating a brilliant light that filled the entire forest. "Your wish is complete," Ember said, smiling with pride. "And because you remembered it with such a pure heart, it has twice the power."
Luna returned through the mirror just as dawn broke over her room. Her mother stood in the doorway, looking healthier than she had in months. "Good morning, sweetheart," she said with the brightest smile Luna had seen in ages. "I feel wonderful today. Shall we go on an adventure?"
Luna hugged her mother tight, feeling the magic of her restored wish warm in her heart. She knew now that wishes weren't just about wanting something—they were about remembering what truly mattered. And she would never forget again.
That night, Luna placed a small drawing of a glowing fox on her windowsill as a thank-you. When she woke the next morning, the drawing was gone, but a single golden leaf lay in its place—a reminder that some magic never truly leaves us.
