The importance of Bees

Maya loved visiting her grandmother's garden every weekend, where flowers bloomed in rainbow colors and fruit trees grew heavy with apples and strawberries. One sunny morning, she met Bella, a busy honeybee who was visiting flower after flower, collecting golden pollen on her fuzzy body.

"Hello there!" Maya said cheerfully, watching Bella work. "Why do you visit so many flowers?"

Bella landed on a nearby sunflower and explained, "I'm doing something very important called pollination! When I visit flowers to collect nectar for honey, pollen sticks to my fuzzy body. When I fly to the next flower, some of that pollen rubs off, which helps plants make seeds and fruit."

Maya pulled out her notebook, fascinated by this information. "So without bees, plants wouldn't make fruit?" she asked, scribbling notes.

"Exactly right!" buzzed Buzz, a plump bumblebee who had just arrived on a lavender plant. "We bees pollinate about one-third of all the food that humans eat. Apples, strawberries, almonds, cucumbers, pumpkins, and even chocolate all depend on bees and other pollinators!"

Maya's eyes grew wide as she looked around the garden. She noticed how many different types of bees were working among the flowers—honeybees, bumblebees, and tiny solitary bees she'd never paid attention to before. Each one was carrying precious pollen from plant to plant.

"What would happen if all the bees disappeared?" Maya asked, though she was a little afraid to hear the answer.

Maya felt worried now. "Are bees in danger? Is this really happening?" she asked. "Unfortunately, yes," Buzz replied with a sad buzz. "Bee populations have been declining because of several problems. Pesticides—chemicals that farmers spray to kill harmful insects—can also harm bees. We're also losing wildflowers and natural habitats where we make our homes."
