Mrs. Twitch unrolled a bright timeline across the library table, with five empty windows for Kai and Zoe to fill. In the third window, she had sketched fern forests and enormous footprints. She placed the Chrono-Amber Core between them, an ancient amber fossil compass with a tiny insect trapped inside, glowing like sunset candy.

Kai and Zoe both touched the Core and shared the same goal: find the middle of the Jurassic. Warm amber light liquefied, flowed like honey over their hands, and pulled them through swirling golden dust. A faint protective shimmer wrapped around them, useful for strange air and heat, but Mrs. Twitch had warned that it could not stop claws, falling trees, or careless feet.

They landed in the Middle Jurassic, about 168 million years ago, in a warm basin that would one day be part of China. The air smelled damp and leafy. There were no grassy lawns or flower gardens, because flowering plants had not yet spread; instead, ferns, horsetails, cycads, ginkgos, and tall conifers made a green maze.

The ground began to thump like a drum. A herd of Shunosaurus stepped from the mist, their long necks swinging above the ferns. Sauropods were plant-eating dinosaurs with pillar-like legs, long tails, and small heads; some later relatives became the largest land animals ever, while Shunosaurus was still about as long as a school bus.

Zoe spotted a smaller shape trembling beside a fallen conifer. It was a juvenile Shunosaurus, separated from the herd and not acting like a pet at all. It sniffed the air, shuffled away from Kai, and gave a low call, the realistic behavior of a frightened young animal trying to find safety without understanding two human visitors.

Kai opened his time-map notebook and drew the valley. Fossil scientists do something similar when they study trackways, which are lines of preserved footprints in ancient mud or stone. The juvenile’s rounded prints were smaller than the adults’, and they crossed patches of crushed ferns, showing the direction it had wandered after the herd passed.

A twig snapped in the fern shadows. A Gasosaurus, a two-legged meat-eater from this ancient ecosystem, moved with its head low and tail balanced behind. Predators are important in habitats because they hunt weaker or unwary animals, which affects how prey move, group together, and watch for danger. Kai and Zoe froze behind a cycad trunk.

Zoe tossed a loose conifer cone against a rock far away. The sound made the Gasosaurus pause and turn, interested but cautious. Kai and Zoe slipped along the stream, staying low, while the juvenile followed the safer cover on its own. Soon the air boomed with adult calls, and the long-neck herd appeared between tree trunks.
