What Makes a Good Friend?

My name is Ava. I am learning about what makes a good friend. Good friends are people who are kind, share, listen, and help each other.

At school, I have a friend named Leo. Leo has short black hair and wears a blue hoodie. He is in my class and sits near me. Good friends listen when someone is talking. When Leo tells me about his weekend or shows me something he made, I look at him and listen carefully. This shows Leo that I care about what he has to say. When I talk, Leo listens to me too.

Good friends are kind with their words and actions. If Leo makes a mistake or drops something, I can say 'That's okay' or 'Let me help you.' Kind words make people feel better. I try to use a friendly voice and say nice things to my friends. Good friends share and take turns. At recess, if I have markers or a ball, I can offer to share with Leo. Sharing means we both get to enjoy things together. If Leo has something special, he might share with me too. We can take turns choosing games to play.

Good friends help each other. If Leo doesn't understand the math homework, I can try to explain it in a simple way. If I need help carrying my art project, I can ask Leo, and he might help me. Helping makes both people feel happy. Sometimes friends disagree or have different ideas. This is normal and okay. If Leo wants to play tag and I want to draw, we can talk calmly about it. We might take turns doing both activities, or we might find a new game we both like. Using calm words helps us solve problems together.

Good friends also respect when someone needs space. If Leo seems quiet or wants to play alone for a while, I can say 'Okay, I'll see you later!' and find another activity. Everyone needs time alone sometimes, and that doesn't mean we aren't friends anymore. I feel happy when I am a good friend to Leo. Being kind, listening, sharing, and helping makes our friendship strong. Leo feels happy too when we are good friends to each other. Every day, I can practice being a good friend. I can look for ways to be kind, listen carefully, share what I have, and help when someone needs it. These actions show people that I care about them.
