Maya loved looking at the Moon every night from her bedroom window. But something puzzled her—sometimes the Moon looked like a bright, round circle, and other times it appeared as just a thin sliver of light. Why did the Moon seem to change its shape?

One magical evening, as Maya gazed through her telescope, something extraordinary happened. The Moon began to glow even brighter than usual, and suddenly a friendly face appeared on its surface! "Hello, Maya! I'm Luna," the Moon said with a warm smile.

Maya gasped in amazement. "Luna! I've been wondering why you change shape every night. Sometimes you're round, sometimes you're shaped like a banana, and sometimes I can barely see you at all!"

"Let me introduce you to my friend," Luna said. Suddenly, a brilliant golden light appeared—it was Sol, the Sun! "Hello, young astronomer," Sol beamed. "I shine my light on Luna constantly, but she travels in a circle around your home, Earth."

Terra, the Earth, joined the conversation with a motherly voice. "Maya, you live on me, and as Luna orbits around me, you see different amounts of her illuminated surface. That's what creates the Moon phases!"

Luna began to demonstrate. "When I'm between Terra and Sol, my sunlit side faces away from you. You can't see me well at all—that's called a New Moon."

Maya watched as Luna moved in her orbit. "Then, as I continue traveling, you start to see a little sliver of my bright side. That thin crescent grows bigger each night as I move along my path."

As the magical encounter came to an end, Maya looked at her notes with satisfaction. She finally understood that the Moon's changing appearance was really about perspective and light, not actual shape-shifting.
