Wings of Tomorrow
Mrs. Twitch dimmed the classroom lights and set the Chrono-Amber Core on the time-map table. Kai and Zoe’s map already stretched from fiery young Earth to seas, forests, giant reptiles, and the asteroid flash that ended the Age of Dinosaurs. “One journey remains,” she said. “Find what survived, and how life began again.”
Kai gulped, but he placed his hand on the glowing amber compass. Zoe touched it too, and together they said, “We want to follow life after the extinction.” Warm amber light liquefied, flowed like honey over their hands, and pulled them through swirling golden dust.
They landed in gray stillness about 66 million years ago, just after the asteroid impact. Ash drifted like dirty snow, and the Sun looked pale behind dust high in the atmosphere. The Core made a faint protective shimmer around them, so they could breathe, but Zoe quickly pulled Kai away from a cracking burned tree.
The world felt quiet because many food chains had broken; with little sunlight, plants struggled, plant-eaters starved, and meat-eaters lost prey. Mrs. Twitch’s lesson echoed in Kai’s mind: extinction means a species disappears forever, but not all life disappears.
The Core pulsed softly and began absorbing faint life signatures from the recovering world. Under charred logs, beetles crawled, ferns uncurled, and small mammals nosed through leaf litter for seeds and insects. These mammals were mostly furry, warm-blooded, and able to hide in burrows, useful traits when the surface world was dangerous.
A flutter zipped between blackened branches. Zoe pointed to a small bird with a beak and feathers, pecking at tough seeds. “A dinosaur survivor,” she whispered. Birds belonged to the theropod dinosaur family, the same large group as Velociraptor and Tyrannosaurus, though these bird relatives were smaller, feathered, and built for surviving.
At last, golden dust spun them back to Mrs. Twitch’s classroom, where pigeons strutted on the windowsill outside. Kai’s timeline was smudged, Zoe’s notes had three spelling mistakes, and both had ash on their sleeves, but their eyes shone. They explained that Cenozoic mammals diversified, birds survived, and every sparrow is a living dinosaur.
