Lucas Learns to Ask for Help
My name is Lucas. I am eight years old and I go to school every day. Sometimes at school, I have questions or need help with something. Everyone needs help sometimes. Needing help is normal and okay. Teachers, parents, and friends are happy to help when someone asks them.
When I need help, there are good ways to ask. First, I can raise my hand if I am in the classroom. Raising my hand lets my teacher know I have a question. My teacher is Mrs. Davis. She has blonde hair and wears glasses. When I raise my hand, Mrs. Davis will see me and come to help or call on me.
I wait quietly with my hand raised until Mrs. Davis is ready. Waiting patiently is polite and helpful. When she comes to me or calls my name, I can ask my question. I use a calm, clear voice to ask for help. I might say, "Mrs. Davis, I need help with this math problem, please." Or I might say, "I don't understand this word. Can you help me?"
Sometimes I might need help outside the classroom. I can find an adult I trust, like a playground supervisor or the school librarian. I can walk up to them and use my calm voice to explain what I need. If I am at home and need help, I can ask my family. I can say things like, "Can you help me tie my shoes?" or "I need help reaching that book." My family wants to help me when I ask.
