I Can Try Again

Today in class, Miss Garcia is teaching us how to write the letter 'G' in cursive. Cursive is a special way of writing where the letters connect together. Miss Garcia has kind eyes and a warm smile that makes me feel safe.

I watch Miss Garcia make a big letter 'G' on the whiteboard. She moves her hand in a smooth, curving line. It looks beautiful and flowing. Now it is my turn to try. I pick up my pencil and press it on the paper. I try to make my hand move like Miss Garcia's hand moved. My letter 'G' does not look like hers.

I feel frustrated. My shoulders feel tight and my chest feels heavy. Sometimes when things are hard, my body feels uncomfortable. This is a normal feeling that many children have. I look at my letter 'G' again. It is wobbly and the lines do not connect the right way. I notice my hands squeezing the pencil very tight. Miss Garcia walks over to my desk. She looks at my paper and says, "Henry, I can see you tried really hard. Learning cursive takes practice." Her voice is gentle and calm.

I take a deep breath. The air goes into my nose and out through my mouth. Breathing deeply helps my body feel calmer. My shoulders begin to relax. I get a fresh piece of paper. This time, I hold my pencil gently, just like Miss Garcia showed me. I move my hand slowly and carefully. I make another letter 'G'. This letter 'G' is better than my first one. It is still not perfect, and that is okay. Perfect is not what matters. Trying is what matters.

Miss Garcia gives me a thumbs up. "Look at that improvement, Henry! You tried again, and you learned from your first try. That is exactly how learning works." I feel proud inside my chest. This feeling is warm and light. I tried something hard, it did not work perfectly the first time, and I tried again.
