Emma's First Day in a New Class
My name is Emma. Today is my first day in a new class at school. Sometimes children move to new classes. This can happen when families move to a new area, or when schools change class groups. It is okay to feel a little nervous and excited at the same time.
When I arrive at my new classroom, I see a door with a number on it. My teacher, Mrs. Chen, is standing at the door with a kind smile. She has black hair in a bun and wears glasses. Mrs. Chen says, "Welcome, Emma! I'm so glad you're here." Mrs. Chen shows me where to hang my backpack on a hook. The hook has my name written on a card above it. This is my special place to keep my things during the school day. Mrs. Chen walks with me to my desk. My desk is near the window where I can see a tree outside. There is a chair that is just the right size for me. On my desk, there is a pencil case and some paper ready for me to use.
I sit down in my chair and look around the classroom. I see other children sitting at their desks. Some children are reading books. Some children are drawing pictures. Everyone is doing quiet activities because it is morning time. A girl at the desk next to mine looks at me and smiles. She has blonde hair in braids. She whispers, "Hi, I'm Lily." I whisper back, "Hi, I'm Emma." Lily seems friendly. It feels good to meet someone kind. Mrs. Chen stands at the front of the classroom. She tells everyone, "Class, we have a new friend joining us today. This is Emma." I can wave or smile at the class. Some children wave back at me. This is a way to say hello.
Mrs. Chen explains what we will do today. First, we will have reading time. Then we will have math. After that, we will have recess, which is time to play outside. Knowing what will happen helps me feel calm. During reading time, I open my book. I already know how to read, so I can do this activity. If I need help, I can raise my hand and Mrs. Chen will come to help me. Teachers are there to help students learn. When it is time for recess, Lily asks, "Would you like to play with me?" I say, "Yes, please." We walk together to the playground. Lily shows me where the swings and the slide are. Playing with a new friend is fun. After recess, we come back to the classroom. I remember where my desk is. I sit down and get ready for the next activity. I am learning where things are and what to do. At the end of the day, Mrs. Chen says, "Emma, you did a wonderful job today." I feel proud. I came to a new class, I met my teacher and new friends, and I followed the classroom routines.
Starting in a new class takes courage. Each day, I will learn more about my classroom and make more friends. Tomorrow will be even easier because I already know what to expect. I can feel good about my first day in my new class.
